Taste of Apulia with Tormaresca “Calafuria” Salento Rosato

A rosé born from Apulia's seaside.

Turquoise waves crash into the cliff just meters away from acres of grapevines along the Apulian coastline. This area is a unique blend of seaside, woodlands and century-old olive groves, creating a terroir unlike any other. While Apulia’s wine has been known more for quantity than quality, producers like Tormaresca have driven the change in this region’s reputation.

Tormaresca, “tower by the sea”, was named after the region’s ancient seaside towers overlooking the Adriatic Sea and was founded with the vision to rediscover and reinvigorate Apulia’s traditional, indigenous grape varieties but also to champion the enological Renaissance movement in the region. The Antinori family started investing in the area in 1998 as they believed that this is one of the most promising regions in Italy for producing top quality wines with a strong territorial identity.

One of their flagship wines is the delicate, rose-tinted “Calafuria” Negroamaro blend from the Upper region of Salento. The grapes for this wine are grown along the Adriatic coastline. Immediately after harvest, the grapes are destemmed and gently pressed, then the must is transferred to temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats to naturally clarify and ferment, while preserving and enhancing the complex aromas. The wine is then left to age on the lees for a brief time to add a more complex flavor and texture.

The name “Calafuria” comes from one of the 700+ bays tucked into the peninsula. Negroamaro thrives close to the sea, reaching a full expression that is delicate, fruity yet savory, and well-rounded as a rosé. On the palate, expect notes of citrusy grapefruit, pineapples and white peaches mixed with jasmine and roses. This wine is ideal for enjoying in the summer heat with fresh seafood, maybe even beachside to call back to its home.
